Mom&T
My mom & daughter 2009

I first learned the importance of community from my mom. She was always volunteering for some activity or another, helping out other people. She almost never said no when someone needed her help. She’s the reason I speak to anyone I pass by no matter how dirty, or down trodden they look, because if I didn’t when I was young, I got the “look”. My mom never acts out of spite or revenge. People love her and love to be around her.

It is because of my mom that I am now leaving my West Coast community and returning to the East Coast. For the past year, I have watched from afar as my mom has dealt with the trauma of cancer. Over the last few months, I came to the realization that I could no longer watch from 3000 miles away and I needed to be there to help her and to spend time with her.

The sadness of leaving, what has been our base for six years, is balanced by the many friends and colleagues who have reached out to us over the last few weeks. I am grateful for all of the communities, from school to work to neighborhood to church to Girl Scouts, who have taken us in, hung out with us, showed us the ins and outs San Francisco over the years. They have offered encouragement and assistance to us. My mom will be so happy to know that we had so many people to help us get through this time. We will be forever grateful to the friends and communities that surrounded us.

What a lovely tribute. Your mother sounds like someone who teaches and inspires all she encounters. I’m sure she’s proud of you. It is an honor to know you. Thank you for touching our lives. Go with God’s grace and peace, and our best wishes. Warmly, Tami and Tomi

Thankful to have gotten to meet you and Tika at Mission Bay community Church. You and your daughter have made a great difference in the life of that church community. You two will be very much missed when you are gone and back in Virginia. Do not forget that you are loved in San Francisco by your church family.

    Dear Katherine

So sad to hear that you will be leaving SF, but even more sad to hear about your Mother’s illness. Although I know you will leave many dear friends & hearts in San Francisco, your heart wil be comforted being with your Mother

Thank you Katherine for this post – the photo really makes me smile :-D! The words leave a lump in my throat. A lovely tribute to your mom. It’s been a blessing for me to serve and worship along with you and Tika at MBCC. Your steady and vital participation in the life of this community has been so appreciated- and now I understand that, although I haven’t met your mom, her legacy has been shared with us in yours and Tika’s presence :). I will miss you both but I know that you are where you’re supposed to be. I will be keeping you, Tika and your mom in prayers – warmest joys and deepest comforts for each of you. We’ll keep in touch.
    Love,
    Denise
