Urban Rest Stop

It is a great thing to see a community come together to support those who can’t do for the themselves. One of the great examples of this is Seattle’s Urban Rest Stop. The idea came about in 1990 after a survey found that Seattle had almost no public rest rooms. The Low Income Housing Institute, a non-profit organization, began a campaign to create safe spaces where people could take showers or do laundry. It took almost 10 years, but in 2000 LIHI open the Urban Rest Stop. Since that time over half a million showers. The center provides basic hygiene services including use of restrooms, passing out toothbrushes and soap.

There will always be people who are homeless or living in overcrowded situations who can not fulfill their to basic hygiene needs. THe URS is a great example of an organization providing service to people when they most need it.

Check out the Urban Rest Stop website for more information and to see how you can help them.
